Bulk Handling Systems Awarded $34.5M Contract for the City of Sunnyvale’s SMaRT Station NextGen Project
Eugene, OR – August 27, 2025 – Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), a global leader in advanced recycling and waste processing systems, is proud to announce its selection to design, manufacture, and install the NextGen Integrated Processing System at the Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer (SMaRT) Station®. The $34.5 million contract marks a major step forward for the cities of Sunnyvale and Mountain View in their commitment of sustainable waste management and advanced materials recovery.
Steve Miller, BHS CEO; “The NextGen System sets a new standard for integrated waste processing in Sunnyvale, combining cutting-edge technology with proven design to maximize recovery and operational efficiency.”
The NextGen System replaces existing equipment with a modern high-efficiency processing line capable of handling 100 tons per hour (TPH) of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 20 TPH of source-separated recyclables.
This upgrade is designed to meet the NextGen Project’s goals, which include:
- Improving operational efficiency through a single integrated system for both MSW and source-separated recyclables
- Supporting the City’s long-term sustainability goals
- Increasing diversion rates while enhancing the purity and quality of recovered materials
- The NextGen System is expected to recover and divert over 75% of inbound MSW organic material for composting, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Key Technologies and Features
- Max-AI® AIR: An innovative sorting solution that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with high-speed air ejection to accurately separate recyclables to reduce reliance on manual sorting.
- SpydIR®-HS: A high-resolution optical sorter using Hyper Spectral Imaging to identify and separate a wide range of materials with exceptional precision.
- Total Intelligence Platform (T.I.P.): Provides real-time monitoring and analytics of material composition and system performance, enabling data-driven decision-making.
- BHS Debris Roll Screen® and OCC Separator®: Patented screening technologies that efficiently separate materials based on size and shape, improving throughput and purity.
- Nihot Windshifter and Single Drum Separator: BHS’ patented process that effectively sort materials based on density, into heavy and light fractions, enhancing overall recovery rates.
Summary
BHS continues to partner with organizations and communities focused on sustainability. Their development of efficient modern waste-recovery-systems is fast becoming the standard allowing municipalities to preserve critical landfill capacity in order to maintain low-cost disposal access for communities.
